Every Account I've Muted Since Elon Musk Bought Twitter
My crusade against seeing unsolicited death, violence & grifters on Twitter
I’ve had a Twitter account for nearly 12 years now. I’m deep in the game. Personally, I feel like my Twitter/X feed has touched every corner of online society. I was on the front lines for Harambe, 2016 Warriors - Cavs, & any other major internet saga you can think of. I’m a Twitter lifer through and through.
Twitter has come a long way since Elon Musk bought the site in October 2022. At that point Twitter was doing a lot of things that they shouldn’t have been doing with the information they were promoting as well as censoring. Real nasty stuff. Initially, I thought Elon Musk bought Twitter to try and save humanity. Not specifically for the free-speech angle, but to make it so unusable that people used social media less. I can almost imagine Elon in a meeting room discussing the purchase and trying to tank the site.
The pessimist in me can’t even fathom what I’m seeing on my timeline every day. There’s no feeling quite like clicking that X app in the morning to check out the scene and the first thing you see at 7:20 AM is decapitation by rogue tire. To be honest, Darren Rovell radicalized me on this issue when he posted the cleanest footage of the JFK assassination. & I’m not the only one who remembers
It was a momentous day for Twitter and I should’ve seen the future then & there. After that crystal clear footage of the assassination got the pop that it did on Twitter we all should have known it was going to be a hellscape of gore & fights for years to come.
I’m over it. I’ve been over it since October 2022. I’m over the bait, I’m over seeing high school fights, I never once followed “@HorrorCarnival” but they found me somehow. There used to be ways to combat this issue without cornering yourself into an echo-chamber.
“You used to be able to se who liked these disturbing posts and know who the sickos were. You could identify the people actively ruining your timeline. You could even give them a pass if you were friends with them & understand that’s the content they share.” Sure grandpa..
Now with all the anonymity on X, all we can do is blame the platform itself.
I have muted 269 accounts on X to date
49 clip sharing accounts
61 street fight/fighting accounts
4 porn bots
31 political accounts
124 spammy, promo, miscellaneous accounts.
The only muted account on this list that I once followed was SportsCenter. They stopped posting about sports so I unfollowed & muted because I couldn’t bear to watch their continuous crumble.
Every other account on this list popped into my For You feed and has spewed some type of disgusting behavior.
The aggregators are simply clip farming. They get easy impressions with viral clips. They don’t add anything, but they’re not the most destructive. More of an annoying time stuck with stolen TikTok & YouTube videos

The violence section is the most enraging. I'm not overly-sensitive to violence. I can understand the nuances of when to use violence in the appropriate setting. These pages are not that. These pages will show you a person getting robbed & stabbed as soon as you wake up. These pages glorify humans at their worst. Highly emotional fights, vicious attacks & plenty of death circulate constantly. I will always mute these accounts. They do no good whatsoever.

Lastly, the spam/general annoyance section. Grifters and engagement farming found their holy land on Elon’s Twitter. Unregulated engagement farming that adds nothing. Many of these accounts were muted for clogging up reply sections or posting spam. Unfortunate, but everyone has to make a living. This was more of a self-preserving mute. Go get paid. Just don’t involve me.
